At Northern Indiana Hispanic Health Coalition (NIHHC), we believe that active families are healthier families! In support of this belief, we are hosting our second NIHHC Annual Futsal Tournament. Futsal is basically indoor soccer on a smaller court. The goal of this tournament is to encourage children, teens and adults to stay active all year long, even during the winter months.
All proceeds will benefit our Healthy Hearts Program (HHP). The HHP focuses on the reduction and prevention of childhood obesity. This program is offered by the NIHHC in several elementary schools in Elkhart county, and since 2013 over 2,500 children from 4th thru 6th grade have been impacted by the Healthy Hearts Program. The program teaches children the benefits of making healthier food choices and engaging in physical activities at school and at home. The NIHHC’s research team carefully measures changes in healthy habits, knowledge retention, health perception, and BMI. In fact, 6th graders that complete the 3 years HHP show a 27.1% increase in health knowledge, a whole letter grade higher than students who do not take the HHP (17.0%).
Last year’s tournament consisted of five divisions ages 8 to adult. 25 teams from Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, and South Bend competed in over 50 games in three days. 1,200 fans came to root for their teams. This year our goal is to double those numbers.
The tournament will be held at Elkhart Central High School and Beardsley Elementary School from Friday, December 14th to Sunday, December 16th.
